The 2024 International Quilt Festival Houston recently announced their Mastery Award winning quilts. The show had nearly 500 entries before narrowing it down to 302 finalists. The quilts were judged by renowned Ricky Tims, Lisa Ellis and Helen Young Frost with over $52,000 being passed out to the winning quilters. Here are the top six quilts.
This quilt features a teapot and utensils within a quilted frame, making for a perfect picture. The artist said, "The realistic effect of the picture frame was achieved using embroidery by manually controlling it on a stationary machine."
This large quilt (67" x 62") has extensive quilting to emphasize the design. Stone noted that the backgrounds were appliqued using a decorative stitch.
This colorful quilt pops off the display. The colors are vibrant and free-flowing. Like all of these winners, it is an original design.
This fantasy-focused quilt has lots of items to consider. A tropical setting is home to an ancient castle, and an airship is approaching.
Wow. The monotone landscape makes the boat pop in this quilt. It was based on a photograph, and the quilt was hand-painted and then threadpainted to give it a unique perspective.
The quilts were on display during the International Quilt Festival, which was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, from October 30 to November 3, 2024. More than 1,200 quilts will be on display within 29 exhibits/categories. This marks the 50th anniversary of the show, and over 40,000 attendees are expected. It is not too late to plan to attend the show and see these quilts in person.
